"Snow Fall"

Multimodality Analysis

Visual

The visual imagery seen in "Snow Fall," is simple yet effective. The colors used are black and white, the black text against the white background. This style is effective because, the layout contains: videos, animation, a readable text size, and information of the people featured in the videos. A slideshow is also a part of this article, which shows skiers enjoying the slopes at Stevens Pass ski area.

Aural

"Snow Fall" provides two videos about "being one with the snow," the excitement that skiers share when they are on/going down the slopes. The dangers of what can happen and what has happened, for example, the accident of skier Elyse Saugstad is also explained. The music is soft along with the soft tone that is used by those being interviewed.

Spatial

Paragraphs/sentences are double spaced after each new paragraph begins. The text is organized by different subjects titled by different headings, and within these subjects there is information about skiers or places to ski such as Tunnel Creek. Separating the skiers from places to ski serves as the proximity of spatial.

Gestural

In the videos, the gestures seen are made through facial expressions. As the people speak, they are only being shown from the chest up so there is not a lot of movement being focused on; however, they are expressing themselves by how wide their eyes get as they speak or nodding their head as a sign of reassurance/ after they speak.

Linguistic

The word choice that is used in the beginning of the article is to describe Elyse Saugstad's skiing accident. The words used are "burst, shattered, whoosh of sound, etc." Using these words helps the reader to comprehend how bad Saugstad's accident was without having to see it visually. Similar words are also used in describing Tunnel Creek with it being "roughly cut, sprinkled with glaciers, powder stash," and so on.
